Come as you are

Just to continue on from the previous post, this is from Jim Dennison’s First 15 blog from yesterday.

By contrast, those who live in a constant state of being poor in spirit experience the abundant joy and peace that comes from being wholly met by God’s unconditional love. You and I don’t have to clean ourselves up to come before our heavenly Father. We don’t have to get our act together before we receive forgiveness for our sins. In fact, the quicker we turn to God in the middle of our mess the more we experience the ever-open arms of our heavenly Father running out to meet us (Luke 15:11-32)

Jesus has made us clean and was the sacrifice for us.

Crowder – Come As You Are

Happy Thanksgiving

God’s Temple

My daughter is doing a devotional as part of her youth group. I have been studying it with her and last night it started talking about the temple of God in the old testament. We talked about how only the chosen priest could enter the temple and holy of holiest once a year and his job was to intercede for the people to ask for forgiveness of sins. But before he entered he had to offer a sacrifice and then was his hands and feet, ie cleanse himself. The devotional also spoke about how our body is a temple. But with Jesus’s death on the cross we don’t need anyone to intercede for us. with the curtain torn we have direct access to God. With Jesus’s death He also cleansed us so God could enter our hearts and dwell with in His temple, ie our bodies. It’s still up to us to choose daily to keep ourselves clean. It reminded me if Psalm 51:10 Create in me a pure heart, O God, and renew a steadfast spirit within me.

Psalm 51 are some great words to pray over.

Have mercy on me, O God,
    according to your unfailing love;
according to your great compassion
    blot out my transgressions.
Wash away all my iniquity
    and cleanse me from my sin.

For I know my transgressions,
    and my sin is always before me.
Against you, you only, have I sinned
    and done what is evil in your sight;
so you are right in your verdict
    and justified when you judge.
Surely I was sinful at birth,
    sinful from the time my mother conceived me.
Yet you desired faithfulness even in the womb;
    you taught me wisdom in that secret place.

Cleanse me with hyssop, and I will be clean;
    wash me, and I will be whiter than snow.
Let me hear joy and gladness;
    let the bones you have crushed rejoice.
Hide your face from my sins
    and blot out all my iniquity.

10 Create in me a pure heart, O God,
    and renew a steadfast spirit within me.
11 Do not cast me from your presence
    or take your Holy Spirit from me.
12 Restore to me the joy of your salvation
    and grant me a willing spirit, to sustain me.

13 Then I will teach transgressors your ways,
    so that sinners will turn back to you.
14 Deliver me from the guilt of bloodshed, O God,
    you who are God my Savior,
    and my tongue will sing of your righteousness.
15 Open my lips, Lord,
    and my mouth will declare your praise.
16 You do not delight in sacrifice, or I would bring it;
    you do not take pleasure in burnt offerings.
17 My sacrifice, O God, is[b] a broken spirit;
    a broken and contrite heart
    you, God, will not despise.

18 May it please you to prosper Zion,
    to build up the walls of Jerusalem.
19 Then you will delight in the sacrifices of the righteous,
    in burnt offerings offered whole;
    then bulls will be offered on your altar.

It’s not sacrifices that God desires, He desires our hearts.

He has shown you, O mortal, what is good. And what does the Lord require of you? To act justly and to love mercy and to walk humbly with your God.
Micah 6:8 NIV

Thanksgiving

So the last few weeks I have been intentionally asking God to speak to me, not that I haven’t prayed for that before on a regular basis but I have been really trying to focus on hearing what He has to say to me in my quiet time. I always have one or two things that I am worried about, and they change from time to time. So today’s devotional was entitled Thanksgiving.

Experiencing God

The devotional reminded to be thankful for the blessings I do have and that in Thanksgiving we need to look past the blessing and look at the source.

I was also reminded that we worship a God who is directly accessible, the curtain was torn at Jesus’s death, which gives us the opportunity to lay our cares and concerns (our anxieties) at His feet. Philippians 4:6 (NIV) promises to not be anxious about anything, but in everything, by prayer and petition, with thanksgiving, present your requests to God.

Being the light

First 15 – Being the Light – November 11

I think this devotional points to why I was so hesitant to start writing this blog. Not that I am anywhere near the man moses was, but I can relate to why he was hesitant to lead God’s people. I am just some guy who has a wrecked and hot mess of a past, but I love Jesus and am so thankful for the grace, mercy and forgiveness He offers. I have hope that He will continue to change me and make me into the man He desires me to be and to be a light to those I come in contact with. We all have scars from our past. With some of those scars, it can be difficult to not be ashamed of them. But Jesus knows them and He can heal them. If we all waited until we were perfect to do something for Jesus’s sake, nothing would ever get done. This is a challenge for me everyday. I don’t feel worthy to lead the family God has allowed me to have, be the husband of my wife, be the father of my kids or lead my men’s small group that God has allowed me to be part of. But my hope and prayer is that with the help of the Holy Spirit I can help my friends and family be drawn closer to Jesus each day and be an encouragement to them each day.

Broken Things – Matthew West

The Journey Begins

Well, I believe God has been speaking to me at different times for a while and I have wondered at times what, if anything, I should do with those messages.  I believe some of these messages I need to share, so this blog is the vehicle which I plan to share these messages.  Some I have written down and will post them.  I am not one to use social media, in fact I’m still not on Facebook, my wife just joined recently to help with her business.  LinkedIn is the extent of my social media use, and that didn’t get used too much until I was laid of from my job last fall.  My prayer is that these blogs posts will be messages that the Holy Spirit prompts me to post and not from my own doing or my own intuition.  My prayer is this blog will be holy ground.

The foundation of this blog is Jeremiah 29:13.  Its a promise of God, but like a lot, if not all of God’s promises, there’s a command to go with it, which means we have a choice to make.  God promises that we will find Him if we search for Him with our whole heart.  This has been a recurring message for me through my daily devotionals, quiet time and prayer time over the recent months.  Jesus makes the same command with promise in Matthew 6, He tells us we shouldn’t worry about being provided for as long as we seek first His Kingdom.  I can certainly attest to this over the last year.  In life, we all seek after something, unfortunately most of the time its after things that will not last.
